Audio Rabbit Hole readers, rest assured, I’m still deeply engaged in the audio world, even if you’ve noticed fewer reviews lately. My approach has always been to prioritize quality over quantity so that you won’t see a constant stream of new posts. I carefully select products to review based on what truly inspires me, those that offer a distinctive listening experience, break new ground in audio technology, or deliver an emotional connection that sets them apart from the rest. For me, passion comes from discovering headphones or IEMs that transform not just how music sounds, but also how it feels.

There are several reasons behind my selective process. First, I rarely accept complimentary gear. Often, I purchase gear myself and may sell it at a loss, so I only take the time to review pieces that genuinely stand out, whether through innovative engineering, exceptional sound signature, or meaningful craftsmanship.

Lately, I’ve been drawn to the rapid evolution in the wireless and TWS (true wireless stereo) market. It’s been thrilling to see advancements like extended battery life, and the adoption of high-resolution codecs such as LDAC and aptX Adaptive, which bring wireless sound quality closer to wired performance. This progress makes wireless options more accessible and compelling than ever before. At this point, much of the TWS gear is still reasonably priced.

While my focus has, for the most part, leaned towards wired gear I’m excited to explore more wireless devices in future reviews. If you have suggestions for wireless products or specific features you’d like covered, please share your thoughts in the comments or reach out directly.

On with the show:

The term ÉTOILE is a French word that means “star.” It is pronounced as eh-too-AHL, with the stress on the second syllable. The word is commonly used in various contexts, such as in astronomy or to refer to a bright point in the sky.

Volk Audio is a new company. However, the man behind the company, Jack Vang, is most certainly not new to the industry. Jack was previously a part of the Empire Ears family. Those familiar with Audio Rabbit Hole know that I always strive to give credit where it’s due, and I’ve reviewed and enjoyed many Empire Ears products over the years.

I still remember my first encounter with Empire Ears, a moment that truly changed the way I experienced music. The craftsmanship and sound quality instantly stood out, and it was clear that Jack’s passion for audio was reflected in every detail. That experience sparked my appreciation for his work and made me eager to follow his journey.

So when I learned about the ÉTOILE, Jack’s first solo creation under Volk Audio, my excitement was genuine. There’s something special about witnessing a visionary take a bold step forward, and I couldn’t wait to hear what Jack had crafted this time. Taking risks is never easy, and Jack faces high expectations following Empire Ears’ many successful releases.

The ÉTOILE is a collaboration with five-time GRAMMY-winning engineer Michael Graves.

Some of Jack’s feelings on collaborating with Michael Graves:

To shape the extraordinary, you align with those who define it.

Michael Graves doesn’t set benchmarks. He embodies them. A five-time GRAMMY® winner and fourteen-time nominee, his ear has defined reference standards for decades. At Osiris Studio, he restores nuance, reveals hidden detail, and elevates sound to something profoundly human.

ÉTOILE began as our vision. Graves validated its neutrality. His precision delivered truth; our intuition delivered emotion. Together, we crafted an in-ear monitor seamlessly bridging analytical clarity and musical soul.

This wasn’t collaboration through compromise. It was confirmation through mastery.

Truth preserved. Sound realized.

A Little Marketing Hype:

ENGINEERED ART

Structural integrity meets acoustic precision.

It begins with a precision-formed acoustic panel. More than structural, it defines the internal chamber, sealing a controlled space where geometry, pressure, and timing align.

Above it rests full-grain Italian Saffiano leather. Naturally damping, it suppresses micro-resonance and refines low-end behavior. Bass definition sharpens. Backgrounds darken. Texture emerges.

Crowning the assembly is a CNC-machined, 24K gold-plated frame crafted from 6061-T6 aluminum. Mounted at three staggered suspension points, it disperses resonance, secures each layer, and anchors the assembly into one rigid structure.

At VOLK, structure is sound.

airflow

ÉTOILE houses all drivers within a shared acoustic volume, utilizing a dual tri-port vent system to regulate airflow and equalize internal pressure across the driver array. This stabilizes diaphragm motion, eliminates unwanted resonance, and preserves clarity and tonal balance. Even a 0.1 mm shift in vent size or placement noticeably alters bass response and overall coherence, underscoring the meticulous precision behind its design.

ELECTRONICS

6-WAY CROSSOVER

ÉTOILE’s crossover is implemented on a custom-engineered PCB, utilizing resistor-capacitor networks to achieve precise six-way frequency division and seamless driver integration. Signals are routed directly into five dedicated sound bores, with specific frequency bands further refined through acoustic filters. This topology ensures exact electrical and acoustic alignment, faithfully reproducing ÉTOILE’s intended sound signature.

Unboxing and Accessories

Unboxing the Volk Audio IEM was a memorable experience that strikes a balance between understated sophistication and premium touches, what I would describe as genuinely semi-luxury. The presentation begins with a plush velvet dust bag, which lends a sense of anticipation and refinement right from the start.

Nestled inside is a large, matte black cube adorned with crisp “Atlanta X Los Angeles” lettering. Atlanta being Volk Audio’s home base and Los Angeles representing Michael Graves’ involvement. The minimal branding and clean lines of the box exude a modern elegance without feeling ostentatious.

What sets this unboxing apart are the thoughtful details: the velvet dust bag not only protects but also elevates the experience, and the box’s sturdy construction gives a premium, weighty feel in hand. The interior layout is organized and visually striking, with accessories like the saffiano leather carrying case and gold-accented collector pins presented in dedicated slots, each component feels intentional and well-considered.

For comparison and in my experience, the VE Erlkonig’s unboxing is the gold standard of opulence in the IEM world. Its presentation is lavish, featuring a custom wooden display case, individually numbered plaques, and a suite of bespoke accessories that feel almost regal. While the Volk Audio package doesn’t reach those extravagant heights, it stands out in its own right by blending modern design with luxurious materials, offering an above-average experience that feels both special and authentic to the brand.

While photos can capture the visual appeal, the tactile sensation of the velvet, the heft of the box, and the precise fit of each accessory all contribute to a genuinely engaging and memorable unboxing.

The accessories you’ll most likely use with these IEMs are the included eartips.  The package comes with VOLK Silicone Eartips in black (sizes S / M / L) and Symbio F Foam Eartips in orange (sizes S / M / L). I found the stock large silicone tips to be comfortable, and they provided a good seal.

For this review, I chose to stick with the tips the product was originally tuned with, rather than experimenting with others. Some users may prefer foam tips for better isolation, or experiment with different tips and cables to adjust the sound and fit to their liking, but I wanted to experience the product as the maker intended.

Another accessory you’ll likely use is the ARC cable. It’s comfortable to wear, made from high-purity copper, and features a braided design for added durability. The connectors are sturdy, and the overall build feels premium. Here are the cable specs:

  • Termination: 4.4mm AEC Balanced, 0.78mm 2-Pin
  • Hardware: CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum, anodized black with 24K gold-plated accents on the Y-split and 4.4mm barrel
  • Conductors: Solid Core 5N OCC Silver, Solid Core 4N Silver, Silver-Plated over 6N OCC Copper, Gold-Plated over 4N Silver, Palladium-Plated over 4N Silver

These premium materials and finishes aren’t just for aesthetics, they can have a tangible impact on the listening experience. The use of high-purity copper and multiple layers of silver and gold plating can enhance signal transmission, resulting in lower resistance and better conductivity. For listeners, this often translates to improved clarity, detail, and overall fidelity in audio playback, helping the IEMs perform at their best.

The ARC cable is thick and visually appealing, adding to the overall premium feel of the package. I haven’t tried cable rolling because, the same as eartips, I prefer to listen to the product as the manufacturer intended. That said, some users enjoy experimenting with different cables to tailor the sound to their preferences. For example, some report that cable swapping can result in subtle changes to bass response or treble clarity, letting them fine-tune the sonic presentation to their liking.

The cable itself has a coated finish and a noticeable weight in the hand, but it remains comfortable even during long listening sessions. Compared to other thick cables I’ve used, which can sometimes feel cumbersome or cause fatigue over time, this one strikes a nice balance between sturdiness and comfort.

If you’re someone who uses a chin slider, you’ll be pleased to know that this one stays securely in place without slipping. Overall, it’s a well-considered accessory that enhances the user experience. For more visual details about the connectors, chin slider, and other features, the included pictures offer a closer look.

Build Quality and Fit:

The build quality of the ÉTOILE stands out compared to other IEMs I’ve tried, due to its premium materials and attention to detail. The faceplate features 24K Gold Plated T-6 Aluminum paired with an Italian imported Saffiano Leather insert, while the shell is crafted from gloss black German-imported Dreve medical-grade resin, and includes dual tri-port acoustic vents.

In terms of weight, the ÉTOILE is among the lightest IEMs I have used, despite housing 10 drivers, it feels almost weightless in the ear. Of course, this ultra-lightweight design is a result of advanced materials and precise engineering, which does not compromise sound quality or durability.

Listener preference for heft versus lightness often varies, with some associating a heavier build with a more premium feel. Personally, I tend to lean that way as well, yet I am genuinely impressed by the comfort and featherweight construction of the ÉTOILE.

Compared to other high-end models, the ÉTOILE feels noticeably lighter, which may appeal to users who prioritize comfort during long listening sessions. While I joked that perhaps the music is piped in from Heaven rather than through the drivers, the reality is that thoughtful design delivers an exceptionally comfortable and high-performing IEM experience.

The fit of the ÉTOILE is characteristic of earphones equipped with multiple large drivers. While their size can be a positive or negative in regards to comfort, the shape and contour of the shell  play a significant role, giving these IEMs an almost custom feel for me. However, it’s important to note that while the large size fits my ears well, users with smaller ear canals may find them less comfortable, so it’s worth considering your own fit preferences before purchasing.

The nozzle features five bores, which help separate different sound frequencies for a clearer listening experience. It is medium-length and includes a lip or flare at the tip to hold an ear tip securely in place. Every reviewer has their pet peeves with design choices, and if you are familiar with any of my reviews, you’ll know I’ve called out many manufacturers on this point in the past. I’m glad to see Jack was thoughtful in this design, addressing a common concern among users.

One caveat I must mention is that upon insertion, I do hear a touch of driver flex, a slight crinkling sound caused by the earphone’s diaphragm moving, which only occurs during insertion. I never hear it at any other time, but I wanted to note this since some individuals are sensitive to driver flex, and your use case may differ from mine.

Review Setup:

The review was written using a couple of sources: the Astell & Kern PD10 (poor man’s SP4000) and the Shanling M8T. The Shanling provides me the opportunity to utilize tubes in my critical listening for this review. My sample music consisted of 320kb, FLAC, 24-bit, Spotify lossless streaming, and Qobuz. The ÉTOILE is very easy to drive, and I never felt the need to use an amp. Both DAP’s paired very well and my preference depends on whether I want to use tubes or not.

Moving on to the sound section….

If I had to sum up the ÉTOILE in just a few words, I’d probably still be scratching my head. This IEM is truly one-of-a-kind in its tuning. When I listen, it doesn’t fit neatly into the usual categories you might see on a frequency graph, and it especially breaks expectations when you cue up your favorite tracks. For instance, people often use “clarity” to describe sound, and the follow-up question is usually, “Is it analytical, fatiguing, or sibilant?” The ÉTOILE manages to deliver engaging clarity without any of those drawbacks, it’s never harsh or tiring, just inviting and lively.

The basis for the overall tuning would be best described as similar to the near field monitor, IMO. A near-field monitor is a type of speaker designed for highly accurate sound reproduction when you’re sitting close to it, like in a recording studio. Knowing this is essential because the ÉTOILE’s tuning lifts both the mids and sub-bass, adding more body and soul to whatever you’re listening to, while providing the precision of a near field monitor.

On occasion, I’m a fan of adult beverages, and when I indulge, it’s almost always additive-free Tequila. The reason is simple: it’s clean, authentic, and unmasked by unnecessary extras. In much the same way, the ÉTOILE feels like an additive-free IEM to me. Just as additive-free Tequila offers a pure, genuine taste, the ÉTOILE delivers a sound that’s uncolored and natural. Every detail in the music comes through clearly, without any artificial boost or manipulation, so you get the true character of every note.

I’ll never forget the first time I played Hiromi’s “Spectrum” through the ÉTOILE. The piano sparkled, the bass had a satisfying rumble, and the sense of space was so lifelike I felt like I had front-row seats. Another standout moment was listening to Snarky Puppy’s “Shofukan,” where the sub-bass added real weight to the groove, and the mids allowed every instrument to shine without overshadowing the vocals. These experiences convinced me that the ÉTOILE isn’t just for audiophiles, it’s for anyone who wants to hear music as it’s meant to be heard.

In summary, you don’t need to be an audio expert to appreciate what the ÉTOILE offers. It’s pure tuning, engaging clarity, and lifelike presentation make it a joy for all listeners.

The bass performance of the ÉTOILE is truly satisfying, showcasing impressive technical prowess. While it doesn’t overwhelm with sheer quantity like a typical “bass head” IEM, it delivers a snappy, clean response with a subtle rumble thanks to excellent sub-bass extension. Sub-bass extension provides the ability of the earphones to reproduce the deepest, lowest notes, the ones you feel more than hear. This sub-bass adds depth and power to your music, making tracks sound fuller and more immersive.

I paused in this section to review the number and type of drivers in the ÉTOILE. I was genuinely surprised when I realized that only one driver is responsible for delivering both the bass and sub-bass frequencies.

The bass is particularly noteworthy because achieving both speed and textured bass, along with intense sub-bass, many times manufacturers utilize multiple drivers working together. The fact that a single dynamic driver handles this entire range so well is a testament to its quality and design. Honestly, I hope that driver is getting paid overtime for the amount of work they’re doing!

When it comes to the ÉTOILE, I have to say the midrange is truly the highlight. Honestly, it’s not just about the mids alone; it’s how all parts of the sound work together in harmony that makes the ÉTOILE special. It’s like every element is playing its role perfectly, creating a sense of harmony that draws you in.

The mids push the sound forward, thus producing the clarity. The smallest details can be heard. Again, I need to stress that there is a level of purity and realism in the mids that is rarely heard in an IEM. With regard to my sound signature preferences, the upper mids can be one of the most polarizing parts of tuning. With the mid part if the midrange of the ÉTOILE being the frequency that is most elevated, you are spared the fatigue that comes from a forward upper-mid.

The treble extends well with copious amounts of resolution. I haven’t encountered any sibilance, but there are times I feel it is pushing me to the edge. What it delivers is air, and that adds to the sense of extension. I like the treble, it is not a smooth treble, it has a little bite, but never breaks the skin. Take that from someone who does not like a bright or sharp signature.

With the ÉTOILE, this layering is terrific, you can hear where every instrument and voice is placed, almost as if you’re sitting in the front row at a live performance, soaking up every detail.

The staging is about how wide and deep the music feels; with the ÉTOILE, there’s a natural sense of space that feels realistic, not exaggerated or artificial.  The ÉTOILE doesn’t try too hard to create fake effects; instead, it keeps things honest and “additive-free,” letting you experience music as it was meant to be, with a genuine sense of space and placement.

Take “Siva” by the Smashing Pumpkins as an example. Right from the intro, you get this deep, satisfying bass rumble that feels powerful but never overwhelms the rest of the song. The percussion is crisp and clear, every hit stands out, and the vocals come through with just the right amount of presence. Never too forward or lost in the mix.

What really connects me to the ÉTOILE is how it brings out the emotional core of every track, no matter the genre. Whether I’m listening to the vibrant energy of jazz, the complexity of instrumental pieces, or the raw emotion in rock tracks, the ÉTOILE’s sound signature adapts beautifully.

For jazz, the accuracy and “front row seat” feeling let you appreciate every nuanced piano note or saxophone riff. On rock or electronic tracks, the bass delivers the right amount of power and the highs remain smooth, making long listening sessions enjoyable and immersive, without ever feeling harsh or tiring. To add to that, I have Infected Mushroom in my playlist, and it translated seamlessly with the ÉTOILE, bass was clean and even with all of the involvement in their tracks, all sounds were distinct and in their place.  No genre pun intended, I felt I was in an electronic trance.

In the end, the ÉTOILE isn’t just for seasoned audiophiles. It’s for anyone who loves getting swept up in their favorite songs. If you’re looking for a listening experience that feels pure and real, the ÉTOILE is sure to deliver.

Regarding comparisons, I do not have many IEMs in this price range to compare to.  I understand that comparisons are valuable to many readers, and I apologize for not being able to provide them directly.

One reason is that the price of these top-of-the-line IEMs makes it challenging to acquire multiple units for comparison, especially since I choose not to accept gear gratis. I believe that accepting free gear could compromise my objectivity, so I decide to purchase equipment independently to ensure my reviews remain unbiased. Additionally, personal time constraints make it difficult for me to commit to loaner programs.

While I am unable to provide direct comparisons at this time, I recommend checking out reviews from other trusted sources or audio forums where users discuss similar IEMs in this price range. These platforms often feature helpful insights and side-by-side comparisons that may assist you in making an informed decision.

You might want to own this IEM if you:

+ Value bass quality over quantity, but still want a strong sub-bass presence.

+ Prefer a smooth, balanced, and non-offensive sound signature.

+ Enjoy musical, non-fatiguing sound that excels during long listening sessions.

+ Are sensitive to upper mid peaks and sibilance, and want treble that sparkles without being harsh.

+ Appreciate a spacious, immersive soundstage.

In Closing

The Volk Audio ÉTOILE stands as a testament to what’s possible when passion, precision, and artistry converge. From its thoughtful engineering and luxurious materials to its emotionally engaging sound signature, the ÉTOILE offers a listening experience that’s both technically impressive and deeply musical.

Whether you’re a seasoned audiophile or simply someone who loves to get lost in music, this IEM delivers clarity, comfort, and authenticity in every note.

If you value pure, uncolored sound, crave an immersive soundstage.  And  if you appreciate craftsmanship that goes beyond the ordinary, the ÉTOILE is worth your consideration.

While its price may limit direct comparisons, in this review, its performance speaks for itself, inviting you to experience music exactly as it was meant to be heard.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. If you have questions, suggestions, or want to share your own experiences, I encourage you to reach out or comment below.
