Astell&Kern has unveiled its latest high-resolution digital audio player (DAP), the PD10, along with its accompanying cradle. Detailed specifications and features can be found on the official Astell&Kern website. The release represents a significant addition to their portfolio of premium audio products.
It can be purchased from Musicteck
This initial unboxing and introduction of the DAP provides a preliminary overview of its integrated features, internal technology, included accessories, and build quality. Further testing is required for a complete evaluation of performance and longevity.

PD10 Pack-ins:
- Astell&Kern PD10 Digital Audio Player: The main component designed for high-fidelity audio playback.
- Docking Cradle: This allows the PD10 to function as a home music streamer, providing connections for audio output and device charging
- Protective Case: A snug-fitting case included to protect the PD10 during portable use
- USB-C Charging Cables: Typically, multiple charging cables are provided for ease of use
- Screen Protectors: To keep the large 6-inch Full HD touchscreen safe from scratches
The package includes all necessary components. The included case is aesthetically pleasing, however, two usability issues were observed. First, the case’s tight fit prevents charging via the provided cradle. The device rests on the USB-C connector, but the case’s bottom thickness impedes complete connection and charging. Removal of the case is therefore required for charging. Second, the case’s upper lip interferes with the swipe-down gesture required to access the notification menu. While not a significant impediment, this minor inconvenience is nonetheless noted.
For starters this DAP is loaded with features and tech;
- World’s First Application of AK4498EX in a DAP
- HEXA Audio Circuit Structure : Complete Separation of Digital and Analog Signal Processing
- Equipped with Impedance-Adaptive Dual Amplifiers
- Automatic Amplifier Matching Mode : Smart Gain
- Overwhelming Audio Performance Through Independent Dual Audio Circuits
- Includes a Docking Cradle for Home Audio Use
The PD10 employs four AK4498EX DACs incorporated in an innovative HEXA audio circuit design with two separately applied AK4191EQs for processing digital signals.
The HEXA audio circuit is designed with a structure in which the AK4191EQ, a separate Digital delta-sigma modulator, reduces noise from the input digital signal, and then the AK4998EX, a completely isolated Analog DAC, processes only the analog signal separately.
This Smart Gain feature is a cool idea in theory and thus far works rather well;
The PD10 features an intelligent impedance detection system. Upon connection, it instantly measures the impedance of the attached headphones or earphones and automatically configures the amplifier (AMP) for optimal performance. This Smart Gain functionality eliminates the need for manual adjustments. Headphones or earphones with an impedance of 32 ohms or less are assigned Normal Gain, delivering a balanced output of up to 5.5 Vrms. Those exceeding 32 ohms are assigned High Gain, providing a balanced output of up to 8.3 Vrms. This automatic impedance matching ensures a consistently superior listening experience for users with diverse headphone and earphone collections.
As for the build of the PD10;
Astell&Kern’s departure from the traditional volume wheel in favor of a button-based interface represents a significant design innovation. The resulting minimalist aesthetic, achieved through the seamless integration of stainless steel and glass, is striking. The distinct material contrast employed to highlight the control buttons further enhances usability. While subjective, this departure constitutes a noteworthy advancement in both the aesthetic and functional design of their digital audio players. This represents a bold step forward in the evolution of their product line.
The power button has an LED ring around it which displays the bitrate rate color;
16-bit = Red
24-bit = Green
32-bit = Blue
DSD = Purple
As for the Cradle;
- Balanced XLR Output: Converts the PD10 into a high-fidelity desktop source with XLR connectivity to powered speakers or amplifiers
- USB-C Passthrough: Simultaneously charges and handles data transmission while docked
- LED Bit-Rate Display: LED lights indicate the playback resolution in real time
Brief Observations;
Initial observations of the PD10 digital audio player reveal a performance consistent with Astell&Kern’s established reputation. The background noise is exceptionally low, contributing to excellent channel separation and sound staging. While a more comprehensive sonic evaluation requires further burn-in time, initial impressions are highly positive.
The user interface is intuitive and responsive, featuring a high-quality display comparable to modern smartphones.
The unit’s weight (15.34 oz) is noticeable, though comparable in size to the Shanling M8T, albeit slightly less thick.
The Smart Gain functionality proves effective, eliminating the need for manual gain adjustments across various headphone impedances.
The PD10 demonstrates ample power to drive a diverse range of headphones, successfully resolving fine musical detail even at higher volumes. While achieving sufficient output levels requires a relatively high volume setting, this is typical of Astell&Kern devices and does not detract from the player’s overall performance capabilities.
